The Mastery Program

Art Cloth pays homage to a lineage of embroidery, surface design and quilting, but synthesizes them in a specifically contemporary way. The cloth becomes an object with a rightful existence as art form - telling stories, challenging perceptions and inviting contemplation.

An ability to invite interaction is part of what draws artists to cloth. The actions of creating cloth are physical - lifting fabric into buckets of brilliant dye, washing it out later, ironing and stretching. Folding and smoothing. Great satisfaction comes from the physical effort required to make the cloth. There is an ongoing interaction with the spirit of the cloth as each length approaches completion.

Twelve Voices from One is an exhibition of works created by the graduating participants in the 2007 Art Cloth Studio Mastery Program. Participants completed a two and a half year study of surface patterning techniques, design concepts and color theory. Inspirations vary - from nature to geometry and spirit – among these artists, but commitment to the cloth surface is a common thread.
